37: Cuatro obstáculos en el camino hacia la mejora personal

 

Todos tenemos la posibilidad de experimentar una vida plena, llena de logros y satisfacciones.

Construir esa vida requiere que tomemos acción para desarrollar una serie de actividades de mejora gradual y continua, que nos llevarán, desde donde estamos en este momento, hasta donde queremos estar, y siempre hay espacio para mejora, sin importar dónde estemos o lo que hayamos logrado hasta ahora.

Muchas veces nos resulta difícil comenzar a caminar este camino. Leemos acerca de él, vemos videos, platicamos sobre el tema, pero no llegamos a tomar alguna acción específica. Los principales obstáculos que evitan que comencemos a avanzar por este camino o que nos detienen antes de que logremos mejoras importantes, son cuatro:

Obstáculo No. 1: Falta de Visión de lo que la vida puede (y debe) ser.

Nos hemos resignado a una vida de subsistencia, donde sobrevivir es suficiente. Nos hemos olvidado de que tenemos derecho a lo mejor de lo mejor en los mundos materiales y espirituales, sin tener que escoger entre uno u otro. Que venimos aquí a experimentar la vida al máximo. Somos los reyes de nuestra vida, pero muchas veces andamos por ella, por nuestro propio reino, con mentalidad de mendigos.

El primer paso para superar este obstáculo es aceptar la posibilidad de que todos podemos vivir una vida plena, que eso no es algo que este reservado solo para algunos afortunados, sino que está al alcance de cualquiera que haga el trabajo necesario para lograrlo.

Recomiendo tomarse unos minutos, en su cama antes de dormirse, o en su cama justo después de despertarse, para imaginar lo que esa vida plena significa para usted. Cada vez que haga este ejercicio se irá formando una idea más clara, con más detalles, de lo que la frase “vida ideal” significa para usted.

Obstáculo No. 2: Baja Autoestima por poco autoconocimiento

 Ver la posibilidad de que una vida plena es posible, es necesario, pero no es suficiente. Si una baja autoestima nos llena de dudas sobre nuestra capacidad para lograrla, podemos entrar en el círculo vicioso de intentos, dudas, fracasos que generan más dudas, que nos llevarán a fracasar en futuros intentos. Si caemos en esto, será muy fácil encontrar evidencias de que en realidad no somos lo suficiente buenos para avanzar por este camino.

La mejor forma que conozco para romper ese círculo es escoger nuestras batallas, esos primeros intentos, con mucho cuidado y sabiduría. Si esos primeros intentos los hacemos en aquellas cosas en las que somos buenos de manera natural y además disfrutamos mucho hacer, el éxito estará casi garantizado, lo que convertirá el circulo vicioso descrito antes, en uno virtuoso, de intentos, autoconfianza, éxitos que generarán más autoconfianza que nos ayudará a obtener futuros éxitos.

Como por lo general pensamos muy poco en estos temas en nuestra vida cotidiana, recomiendo tomar una semana o dos para hacerse constantemente las siguientes preguntas:

¿Qué cosas de mi vida cotidiana disfruto hacer? ¿Cuáles no disfruto para nada? Es mucho más fácil ver esto en los extremos (lo que de verdad disfruto, lo que de verdad no me gusta) e ir avanzando hacia en medio. Anote en su celular o en una libreta esas cosas que vaya identificando en su día a día. Pronto va a ver que aparecen patrones o tendencias, donde se ve claramente algunos grupos o tipos de actividades que disfruta más. Ese es el primer círculo.

La segunda pregunta importante es ¿en cuáles actividades soy naturalmente bueno? Para efectos de ilustrar este punto me voy a comparar con mi esposa. Cuando a ella le toca hablar en público, exponiendo algún tema, por lo general se siente incómoda, un poco nerviosa, no es algo que disfrute hacer. Por el contrario, yo estoy siempre buscando cualquier oportunidad que tengo para hablar en público, disfruto mucho estar en un escenario o enfrente de una clase. Al mismo tiempo, mi esposa disfruta los niños de una forma extraordinaria, juega y baila con ellos, les canta, les lee historias, etc. Por eso mis hijos comenzaron a hablar y a leer tan temprano en sus vidas, pues fueron intensamente estimulados por ella desde que estaban en su vientre. Yo soy un bojote insípido con niños. Trato de jugar con ellos y alguna cosa diré, pero no soy ni el 10% de efectivo de lo que mi esposa es en esa misma actividad.

La sugerencia práctica es que observe atentamente su vida para identificar esas actividades en las que usted se siente más cómodo. Por lo general todos tenemos una idea sobre esto que podemos usar como base para el análisis y luego ir validando con nuestra observación consciente de nuestro desempeño diario.  Este es el segundo circulo.

Después de realizar este ejercicio de auto conocimiento por unos días vamos a estar en mejor posición para seleccionar esos primeros pasos de auto mejora que sugiero sean escogidos dentro de esa zona donde el circulo 1 y el 2 coincidan. Mientras más alineados estén con nuestros gustos y nuestras habilidades naturales, más posibilidades de éxito tendremos de lograrlos.

Obstáculo No. 3: Baja autoestima por compararse con otros

 En línea, y muy relacionado con el obstáculo anterior, está el daño que hace a nuestra autoestima compararnos con otras personas en términos de mejor o peor. Para esto sugiero enfocarse en el hecho de que todos somos buenos y malos en diferentes cosas, por lo tanto, compararse con otros, así, en general, no tiene sentido. Solo podemos hacerlo en relación con acciones específicas.

Retomando el ejemplo de la comparación con mi esposa que utilicé antes, considerando esa información que presenté, ¿quién de los dos es mejor entonces? Así, en general, es imposible decirlo. Si amarramos la pregunta a quien es mejor expositor, yo gano. Si la amarramos a quien es mejor con niños, ella gana. Y pasa lo mismo en todos los demás aspectos de la vida. Solo somos mejores o peores que alguien en relación con una actividad o un grupo de actividades específicas. Nadie es mejor que nosotros en general y nosotros no somos mejores que nadie en general.

En lugar de pensar en términos de mejor o peor, los invito a pensar en términos de cómo podemos servir mejor, a nosotros mismos, a nuestro círculo íntimo, a nuestra comunidad y al mundo en general. Nuestras mejores oportunidades para servir están dentro de ese rango de actividades que disfrutamos hacer y para las cuales somos naturalmente buenos. Y ahora que ya hemos definido esos rangos, será mucho más fácil identificarles.

Todos tocamos una nota en esta sinfonía cósmica que el gran director de orquesta está tocando. Enfocarnos en tocarla con la mejor de nuestras posibilidades es nuestro trabajo, lo que venimos a hacer aquí, y mientras menos nos distraigamos en pensar qué nota está tocando el vecino, mejor nos irá.

Obstáculo No. 4: Irrespetar el ritmo de avance que es realmente posible.

Todo viaje, por largo que sea, está compuesto por una serie de pequeños pasos. Querer comenzar a correr y saltar desde el inicio es contraproducente y aumenta las posibilidades de que abandonemos la tarea antes de completarla.

Nuestra mejor opción es definir una actividad inicial sencilla, fácil, cuyo éxito este casi garantizado. Y cuando nos sintamos cómodos ya con esa tarea, aumentemos un poco la duración o la intensidad o el grado de dificultad, y luego otro, y otro, hasta que eventualmente lleguemos a donde queremos llegar.

Otro factor crítico es la velocidad de avance que definamos. Si queremos avanzar al siguiente paso antes de que estemos realmente listos, las posibilidades de que lleguemos a donde queremos llegar disminuyen. El objetivo debe ser que ese nuevo nivel de actividad se mezcle y se confunda con nuestra rutina cotidiana hasta que se vuelva un hábito más de nuestra vida. Antes de que eso ocurra se verá como una lucha, después ya ni nos daremos cuenta cuando la hagamos. En ese momento es tiempo para dar otro paso. Y así avanzamos de manera sostenible.

La otra causa de renuncia o de lucha interna contra nosotros mismos, se da cuando no reconocemos que rara vez hay una línea recta de avance hasta nuestro objetivo. Esto casi nunca ocurre. Por lo general el camino estará lleno de curvas, de paradas, incluso de retrocesos. Las condiciones van a cambiar y debemos estar listos a ajustar algunas cosas, y más importante, debemos estar listos a perdonarnos cuando no cumplamos lo planificado, sin hacer de eso un drama que dañe más nuestra autoestima. Muchas veces el auto reproche y el remordimiento hacen mucho más daño que el error mismo.

Si se descubre fallando, tranquilo, regáñese, perdónese y retome el avance. Sin dramas, sin espectáculos, sin auto-flagelamiento. Solo siga caminando, tome el siguiente paso, y luego el otro, y el otro…
